An elegant and fine quality carver or armchair, in a deep mahogany of the type traditionally referred to as ''Red Walnut''. The tall back has a curved and moulded top rail above a solid panel with a shaped moulded rail below, flanked by turned posts terminating in finials, with shaped arms on turned supports, above a solid seat with shaped front and side aprons, raised on turned front and square rear legs united by finely-turned stretchers.
Original condition and superb colour and surface patination.
The chair was found in Breconshire, but was probably made in the town of Carmarthen, west Wales, which was an important cabinet-making centre in the eighteenth century.
I''ve had this chair in my private collection for a number of years and always thought that it had a very American look.
