RARE LATE 17TH CENTURY ITALIAN SAVONA MAJOLICA FAIENCE DELFT HANDLED BOTTLE JAR
 
Brief Description:
 
This is a rare, exceptional and large example of a late 17th/early 18th Century Italian Twin-Handled Faience Bottle made in Savona and bearing the Savonese shield mark to the underside.
 
circa 1690-1700
 
The beautiful tin-glazed bulbous body is hand-painted in blue manganese with a lighter powder-blue/white ground.
 
It has a short cylindrical neck surmounted with scrolling twin handles and a small sun and moon motif on each side.
 
The whole is adorned with typical scenes from the Italian Baroque period, including Putti on one side, and the Priamer Fortress (built in 1542) on the other.
 
There are also scattered insects, birds, flowers, celestial objects and other foliage.
 
The base bears the Savonese Crown Armorial shield mark within an unglazed footed rim.
