Majolica ceramics were introduced by Herbert Mintons firm at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. Inspired by Renaissance tin-glazed earthenware, Victorian majolica combined lead glazes with relief moulding, becoming a defining decorative arts movement of the late nineteenth century.

Majolica pieces were crafted from press-moulded earthenware clay, fired once to a biscuit state, and subsequently decorated with metal-oxide coloured glazes. These lead-based glazes fused during a secondary firing to produce rich, translucent colours.

Authentic Minton pieces typically feature impressed maker marks, such as the name Minton or Mintons, along with specific shape numbers and year code ciphers stamped into the base underneath the glaze.
