Compact Inlaid Mahogany Cabinet

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This Compact Inlaid Mahogany Cabinet is not only very decorative but also extremely versatile.

Standing on bracket feet, the exterior is decorated with inlaid lines and quadrant fan inlay throughout. A good sized storage area is revealed upon opening the panelled door, along with useful additional storage in the free running drawer.

The Mahogany is of a good rich hue rich contrasting so sharply with the inlaid decoration. With the polished brass handles working so well with the timber too. The decent quality timber adds a good weight to the piece, aiding stability. The addition of a backstand also stops anything rolling off the back of the top too.

This little cabinet could be used by the bed, or with a lamp on it at the side of the sofa or indeed could be used in so many other areas of the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pot cupboards and small bedside cabinets became popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras, continuing into the Edwardian period. Originally designed to house night conveniences discreetly, these pieces evolved into general bedside storage featuring fine timber veneers and decorative boxwood stringing inspired by Sheraton designs.

Cabinetmakers during this period predominantly used solid mahogany and rich mahogany veneers. Decorative linear details were created using contrasting boxwood or satinwood stringing, while hardware typically consisted of cast brass handles and knobs.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut or early machine dovetail joints in the drawer construction, solid timber back panels, and natural wood oxidation on untreated surfaces. Genuine line inlay is embedded into the wood veneer rather than painted on the surface.

A compact mahogany cabinet functions effectively as a nightstand beside a bed, an occasional side table beside an armchair, or a hall storage piece. Pairing dark wood with lighter neutral wall tones or contemporary art creates a balanced contrast between modern and traditional elements.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer cracking and fading. Dust regularly with a clean, dry microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber and patina.
