Antique silver Mappin half hunter pocket watch & chain.
A handsome original private label watch made for the high end retailer Mappin, with an English movement, case and chain.
The watch has an English stem-winding movement, signed Rands Lever, which is working nicely. The name Rands (R and S for Rotherham and Sons) was registered in 1928 and was first seen in adverts for the 1929 British Industries Fair where the company was listed as ‘manufacturers of English gold and silver watches in all varieties’.
The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for Birmingham 1930 with a maker’s mark for the Dennison Watch Case Company, an English case manufacturer and supplier to various watch makers. The case is in lovely condition.
The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover.
Inside, there is a glass lens which is in good condition.
The dial is signed Mappin and it is in beautiful condition with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.
The watch comes with a silver watch chain, 31cm including the T-bar and the clasp. Each of the links has the silver lion mark. The chain is hallmarked for Birmingham 1901, and they were manufactured by the Birmingham silversmith Henry Allday in 1901.
The silver fob is also hallmarked for 1901, with a maker’s mark for the silversmith Hands & Pearce. The fob measures 14mm wide, 30mm high excluding the rings.
The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.
