1966 Breitling Navitimer Ref 806 - 'White Logo' Aopa Wristwatch

1940 - 1960
Description

A 1966 Breitling Navitimer reference 806 wristwatch, produced for the AOPA. A black dial with calibrated scales surrounding, used as a base speed/time measurement for pilots to perform in flight calculations. The outer rotating 'slide rule' bezel is used as a logarithmic scale to read the measurements, using the dial as the constant. The dial has 3 subsidiary dials, including a subsidiary seconds to 9 o'clock, a 12 hour chrono counter to 6 o'clock and a 30 minute counter to 3 o'clock. The hours and minutes are marked with extended lume batons, with 12 shown seperately. The dial is signed with the AOPA logo, showing this watch was supplied to a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of America.

The stainless steel case is in excellent condition, showing hardly any signs of wear or damage - quite unusual for a watch of this size from this period. The rotating bezel is notched to the edge, designed for tactility during use. Each lug shows a light champfer to the centre, expanding slightly towards the ends. The watch has original Breitling pushers and winding crown. The snap on case back is marked with 'Stainless Steel, Breitling, 806'. Signed to the inner with the serial number, which dates this watch to 1966. Case reference 806.

The watch is powered by a manual wind 17 jewel Breitling mechanism, signed as the base caliber Venus 178. The mechanism is stamped WOG to the balance, indicating the watch was specified for US import by Breitlings importers/counterparts Wakkmann.

The collaboration between Breitling and the AOPA produced various models over a long partnership, some of which have recently been reissued. This is the second generation model which is different from the original in several aspects, with white subsidiary dials as opposed to black as well as different hour markers. This model is even rarer as it has to matching white AOPA logo as opposed to the gold/gilt versions on the earlier and later models.

Case width (excluding crown) 41 mm

Case height 48mm

Case depth (including glass) 13mm

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the early 1950s, the Breitling Navitimer was designed specifically for pilots and adopted by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). It integrated a circular slide rule bezel allowing aviators to perform complex flight calculations directly on their wrist.

Mid-20th-century chronographs typically feature stainless steel or gold-plated cases, acrylic crystals, tritium luminous hand inserts, and hand-wound mechanical movements paired with leather or steel mesh straps.

Authentic reference 806 models feature precise case back engravings with correct reference and serial numbers, period-correct logo placement on the dial, a Venus 178 or Valjoux movement, and a functional slide rule bezel with matching typography.

A classic stainless steel chronograph functions as a versatile accessory, complementing formal tailoring, casual denim, and leather outerwear due to its balanced proportion and understated sport-utility aesthetics.

To preserve a vintage timepiece, keep it away from water and strong magnetic fields, wind the mechanical movement regularly, and schedule professional servicing by a specialist horologist every three to five years.
