Julie Cartwright Antiques has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
She was born in 1709 in Clerkenwell. In 1730 she married John Bateman, jeweller and chain maker. They had six children. In 1760, Hester's husband died of consumption. Hester carried on the family firm and entered her own mark in 1761. She appears to have been illiterate , as her only signature in the records is the crude initials HB. In 1790 Hester handed over the firm to her sons Peter and Jonathan. She died in 1794, aged 85 years.
