We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bonheur du jour is a type of small, lightweight writing desk that originated in France during the 1760s and quickly gained popularity across Europe, particularly during the English Georgian and Sheraton periods. Characterised by a flat writing surface with an attached raised cabinet or shelf unit at the back, it was traditionally designed for ladies private correspondence, bookkeeping, and small keepsakes.

During the late 18th century, cabinetmakers crafted Sheraton style bonheur du jour desks using high-grade timber, with satinwood being particularly prized for its pale, golden lustrous grain. Construction often featured tulipwood, rosewood, or boxwood crossbanding and inlay, set over a solid pine or oak carcase, finished with brass castors and drop handles.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, uneven hand-planed timber surfaces on the rear and underside, and genuine wear patterns around original lock plates and feet. The satinwood should show natural depth and patina acquired through age rather than a modern uniform synthetic coating.

Due to its compact footprint and slender silhouette, a bonheur du jour works well in modern living rooms, master bedrooms, or quiet alcoves as a dedicated writing station or decorative dressing table. Positioning the desk near natural side lighting highlights the figured satinwood grain and inlaid details.

To preserve satinwood veneers, position the furniture away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent timber movement or lifting inlays. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and an occasional thin application of beeswax polish will protect the original finish and patina.
