19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A Victorian brass coat and or hat hook c1880. Of substantial size, there is plenty of room to hang two heavy coats or a coat and hat r other combination. The hook has a classic scrolling design, with a substantial backplate for fixing to the wall. A good addition to the boot room. I. Good antique condition. No damage but some of the inner curves are inaccessible for polishing … but then that wasn’t the intention when made.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian coat and hat hooks from the late 19th century typically feature functional double-scroll designs, allowing a hat to rest on the upper arm while a coat hangs below. These hardware items were often cast in solid brass or iron and featured decorative flourishes suitable for formal entryways and hallstands.

Traditional late-19th-century wall hooks were predominantly cast from solid brass, iron, or bronze. The casting process involved pouring molten metal into sand moulds, resulting in dense, durable pieces that were subsequently hand-finished and polished.

Authentic period brass hooks display subtle casting irregularities, original countersunk screw holes, and natural oxidisation or patina in unpolished crevices. Genuine antique examples also possess significant weight compared to modern hollow reproductions.

Designers frequently mount series of antique brass hooks onto restored timber planks to create bespoke coat racks for entryways, boot rooms, or utility spaces. Combining historic brassware with neutral backdrops creates functional wall storage that adds period detail.

Cast brass hardware should be cleaned with a soft cloth and mild soapy water to remove surface dirt. Avoid aggressive chemical polishes or abrasive pads that strip away historic surface patination; applying a thin layer of microcrystalline wax helps protect against further tarnishing.
