Bacchus and Mars Chelsea Style Figurines by Samson & Cie, Circa 1850.

19th century
Description

These antique figurines, made in the Chelsea style by the French porcelain manufacturer Samson & Cie around 1850. Representing the Roman gods Mars and Bacchus, the figurines are carefully modelled and hand-painted, with soft pastel colors and elegant gold accents, typical of mid-19th century decorative art. Mars, the god of war, is dressed in classical armor with a plumed helmet, standing next to a shield decorated with a Gallic rooster – a clear reference to France and its military tradition. Bacchus, the god of wine and celebration, holds a bunch of grapes in his raised hand and a wine cup in his lowered hand. He wears a fur draped over his shoulder, emphasizing his joyful and wild character. The bases are decorated with pierced scrollwork, delicate flowers, and gold highlights. On the back of each figure is the Samson mark: a tilted gold anchor - a tribute to the original Chelsea porcelain - along with an impressed “S”, commonly used by Samson in the 19th century. These figurines show Samson’s skill in reproducing earlier English porcelain models with great care and detail. They are ideal for collectors interested in classical themes and 19th-century European porcelain.

Dimensions: Bacchus height 15,5 cm, Mars height 15 cm.

Condition: both figures are without flaws, the gold is a little scuffed, otherwise in excellent antique condition.
