Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval face of scarce format with 'aina chuval' guls to the face and small flowers to the elem panel.

Late 19th century.

A good Tekke Turkmen chuval face of scarce design. The main field is filled with 30 aina guls of the chuval gul format; the elem has diagonal rows of small flowers which are found in both Tekke and Saryk chuval. Cochineal dye is used throughout.

Good condition with even wear and medium pile, the top corners have very small old repairs.

A chuval is a large, rectangular bag traditionally woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes, particularly the Tekke sub-group, for storage inside nomadic dwellings and during migrations. The front face of the bag features intricate knotwork and tribal emblems known as guls, often preserved as decorative textiles after the backing has been removed.

These textiles were hand-knotted using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. Dyes were derived from natural vegetable and mineral sources, predominantly madder root for deep red tones and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces exhibit dense, finely tied asymmetrical knots on a flexible wool foundation. Key visual signatures include repeating primary guls, such as the Aina gul motif, accompanied by a distinct lower border design known as an elem.

These textiles are frequently mounted as wall art or framed to preserve their structure while displaying their geometric patterns. They can also be used as table runners, draped over modern seating, or layered onto neutral area rugs.
