An Interesting William and Mary Period Walnut Chest on Original Stand, c.1700.
This lovely piece of furniture is a very rare survivor from the turn of the 18th century. Chests on stands like the present piece were a development of the chest of drawers that led eventually to the tallboy or chest on chest. The stand consists of six barley twist legs combined with curved stretcher bars.
The chest section consisting of three equally-sized drawers, which retain their original drop handles with Tudor rose backplate pattern and cast escutcheons. The drawer fronts consist of panels of walnut and contrasting sections of osyter veneering, laid in a geometric pattern, with strung borders. The sides have inlaid marquetry with a design incorporating two hearts.
The top of the piece also has strung marquetry, in a geometric pattern, wide crossbanding and some oyster veneering.
