Pair of French Régence Style Giltwood Armchairs C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An Exceptional Pair of French Régence Style Giltwood Armchairs c.1900

These chairs were probably made in Paris, inspired by the designs of the Régence period in France (1715-1723). The frames have a centred carved shell on the crest rail. The front, back and side seat rails all serpentine with carved scallop shells to the centre and the cabriole legs terminating in hoof feet. The knees of the chair are finely carved with angled shells and foliage and the tops of the arms are carved with an interesting guilloche design incorporating diamonds or lozenges. The high backs and stately proportions are quite baroque.

We have upholstered the chairs to in an antique linen.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Regence style represents an early 18th-century French transitional period bridging the formal symmetry of Louis XIV and the fluid Rococo curves of Louis XV. Seating typically features high upholstered backs, carved shell cresting, cabriole legs, and sweeping armrests.

Frames were typically carved from hardwoods such as beech or walnut before being prepared with gesso layers. Gold leaf was applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, and frames were upholstered with webbed seats, horsehair stuffing, and woven textiles.

Look for hand-carving marks on the frame underside, natural wear on the gilding revealing the underlying red or yellow bole clay, and traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon joints rather than modern fasteners.

Ornate giltwood armchairs function well as statement accent pieces when paired with neutral upholstery. Position them against contemporary architectural backdrops or plain walls to allow the carved detail to stand out without cluttering the visual space.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting fragile gold leaf. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or high humidity, which can deteriorate the underlying gesso preparation.
