Description

The term 'Nim-Suzani' refers the smaller format suzani. Nim-Suzanis often run the risk of being a little cluttered in their composition. However, this lovely example has perfect balance. The field design is flowing and elegant while the flowers in the border are beautifully executed and well-spaced. Note also the variety of flowers, a subtle indication of fine workmanship, and the saz-type leaves. The silk embroidery has survived in good condition with only some minor losses. The cotton background is also in good condition with only some minor areas of restoration. The original lining on the back is intact. This is a very pretty piece which is both collectible and highly decorative.

A Nim-Suzani is a traditional hand-embroidered textile panel originating from Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan, created in a smaller size format than a full suzani. Historically crafted for bridal dowries, these panels feature ornate floral patterns executed in silk thread on woven grounds.

Authentic 19th-century suzanis were hand-embroidered using natural vegetable-dyed silk threads on narrow strips of handspun cotton or linen cloth. These woven strips were stitched together prior to or after completing the intricate needlework.

Genuine antique suzanis demonstrate subtle colour variations from vegetable dyes, hand-loomed ground fabrics, visible drawn guide lines beneath stitches, and slight irregularities across the needlework. The reverse side typically shows traditional chain or couch stitching.

Embroidered suzani panels can be mounted on archival Conservation boards to display as framed wall art above sideboards or sofas. They may also be placed over contemporary soft furnishings to introduce colour, pattern, and historical texture.
