Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shell cameo carving gained immense popularity during the Renaissance and experienced a major resurgence in the nineteenth century, particularly in Italy. Artisans utilised the contrasting natural colour layers of marine shells to carve detailed classical portraits and relief scenes in high relief.

Authentic shell cameos are carved from natural marine shells such as sardonyx, helmet, or queen conch shells, which possess distinct colour strata. The carved relief is typically set into precious metal frames, such as nine-carat or eighteen-carat gold, silver, or gilt brass.

An authentic shell cameo displays slight natural translucency, unique colour variations, and minute tool marks under magnification. In contrast, synthetic or plastic reproductions often feature uniform colour, seam lines from moulding, and a smooth, unvaried surface back.

A tabletop shell cameo can be positioned on a mantelpiece, inside a glass display cabinet, or styled atop a stack of art books on a console table. Lighting the piece from the front highlights the translucent relief details and gold framing.

Clean shell cameos gently using a soft, dry cloth or a brush with fine bristles to remove dust from tight carved crevices. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or prolonged submersion in water, and occasionally apply a tiny drop of mineral oil to preserve the shells natural moisture.
