Description

A 19th century folding X-frame vineyard table with poplar top and oak base.

Great patina to the top and a visually appealing but wonderfully simple construction. Bars to the rear of the top have four mortices which sits straight on the X-frame.

Historically known as a table de vendange, a French vineyard table is a circular tilt-top table originally designed for wine growers during the grape harvest. Its folding mechanism allowed it to be easily stored or transported into the vineyards and cellars for seasonal wine tasting.

Traditional French vineyard tables were constructed from durable native hard woods such as oak, chestnut, pine, or fruitwood. The tops feature thick joinery planks supported by a sturdy folding wood trestle frame.

Authentic period examples display age-appropriate wear to the timber planks, original wooden peg construction, hand-forged iron pivoting hardware, and a working tilt mechanism designed to allow the top to flip vertically.
