Culvertons has dated this Antique Satinwood Writing Table to the 1890s.
It is is now classified as Sheraton Revival. West Indian Satinwood was the timber most associated with the original Sheraton period (1790 - 1805). However, due to demand, natural stocks of this wood were decimated. A hundred years later, cabinet makers had to source alternatives, with the same deep lustrous light reflecting qualities. Species, such as Ceylon and East Indian Satinwood were used to mimic the original. This lovely writing table is partly constructed and decorated using these timbers. This example, which is banded and strung with tulipwood, ebony and boxwood is not only outwardly visually appealing, it is also finely constructed to emulate the craftmanship from the Sheraton period. The attractive deep burgundy writing surface, which is made from a high-quality natural leather hide is in remarkably good condition. The traditional blind and gold-leafed patterns that decorates its edges are particularly fine. The refined swan-necked handles are original, as are the castors that support the table. All the cabinet fittings are in good condition. Keys have been cut to operate its two brass locks. As you can see from the images the table is decorated on all sides, so it can occupy a more central position in your room, if so desired. A good example of a sought after writing table.
