Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1890s.

The box is quite exceptional, unusually carved, these are usually quite plain and simple. The top section is for "Letters" with a hinged lockable lid, complete with working key, the glazed window was present so that the staff could see if there were letters to be collected for postage.

On the back (at the bottom) is a small engraved plaque by the retailer "Mawson, Swan & Morgan - Newcastle On Tyne"
A superb piece in excellent condition, professionally polished with a waxed sheen to showcase the wood, the brass fittings beautifully cleaned too.
11" wide x 5" deep x 14" tall at rear.
