Attributed to William Payne Ows Original Georgian Antique Watercolour Painting – Ruined Gatehouse English Landscape C.1800

19th century
Description

Type of artwork: Original Watercolour – “Ruins in a Landscape”

Surface: Watercolour Paper

Artist and Signature: Attributed to William Payne OWS (1760–1830), unsigned

Landscape Study: This evocative watercolour captures a romanticised ruin set in a richly atmospheric landscape. Two period figures stroll through the archway of a twin-towered gatehouse, surrounded by wooded paths and subtle evening light. With delicate brushwork and expert tonal handling, the painting strongly echoes the style of William Payne — a pioneering English watercolourist and founding member of the Old Watercolour Society, known for integrating architectural ruins into poetic natural settings.

Approximate age of artwork: Circa late 18th to early 19th century (c.1790–1820)

Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Framed, as shown.

Important notice regarding frames – please read carefully.

Items which are presented in frames are usually the old original frames which came with the artwork. We would typically only remove the frames if they were severely broken or damaged. In line with our conservation ethos, we believe that a painting should be sold within its original setting rather than re-presenting in a contemporary mount & frame unless necessary. Customers also prefer to choose their own way of presenting their painting or engraving. Frames therefore WILL have wear, discolouration or damage in line with their age.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request

Condition Report: This painting is in good condition for its age, with no apparent damage or fading. The surface remains clean and stable, and the colours retain a beautiful richness. The frame shows minor wear consistent with age but presents very well overall. Please see all photographs to appreciate the quality and detail. Don’t hesitate to request further images or information before purchase.

Size of painting incl. frame is approx: 49 x 41 cm (mount aperture approx. 27 x 20 cm)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Georgian watercolours reflect the popularity of the Picturesque movement, capturing dramatic countryside landscapes, historic ruins, and rustic architecture through layered wash techniques.

Artists utilised handmade rag paper, water-soluble pigments derived from natural minerals and plants, and fine sable brushes, often laying down ink outlines before applying tonal washes.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit fine rag paper with deckled edges or watermarks, age-appropriate toning, characteristic pigment choices such as Paynes grey or gamboge, and traditional atmospheric wash techniques.

Pair the artwork with a clean gilt or dark wood frame, placing it within a gallery wall, above a mantelpiece, or alongside traditional case furniture to introduce historic depth.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity, frame it using acid-free mounting materials and UV-filtering glass, and never apply liquid cleaners directly to paper.
