This beautiful pair of vases, converted to lamps are crafted from Chinese cloisonné enamel and French Chinoiserie style ormolu mounts. The ovoid body of each vase features a variety of beautiful coloured butterflies and floral sprays. The mounts feature exquisite finely carved elephant heads. The main background colour is a vibrant turquoise.

The practice of combining Chinese export cloisonné enamel with French Chinoiserie bronze mounts was a popular during the latter 19th Century.

Ormolu mounted cloisonne table lamps feature decorative vitreous enamel brass or copper bases fitted with cast gilt-bronze mounts. Popularised in nineteenth-century Europe, especially France, these lighting fixtures often adapted imported or Chinoiserie-style Chinese and Japanese vases into functional electric or oil lamps.

These lamps are constructed using copper or brass body vessels decorated with enamel paste held in place by delicate metal wires (cloisons). The surrounding decorative mounts, bases, and handles are crafted from chased and gilded bronze, commonly referred to as ormolu.
