Description

This wonderful card tray is unmarked but is made of Old Sheffield Plate. Dating to c1820 with a Coat of Arms to the centre on an inlaid silver cartouche. Beautifully detailed and standing on three stylised feet.

In good condition with some copper bleed due to age and use.

Popularised during the Georgian and Regency eras, small trays or waiters were used in upper-class households to present visiting cards, letters, or small drinks. Old Sheffield Plate, invented in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, allowed silversmiths to create these items by fusing sheets of sterling silver to a copper core before crafting the final object.

Old Sheffield Plate consists of a layer of silver fused onto one or both sides of a thick copper ingot. This combined metal slab was rolled into thin sheets and hammered, chased, or turned into functional homeware and tableware.

Authentic pieces often exhibit bleeding, where the underlying copper shows through the silver layer due to historic polishing. Additionally, they lack modern electroplating hallmarks and frequently feature hand-chased ornamentation, folded edges, or inset silver shields for armorial engraving.

A small salver can be placed on a hall console or sideboard to collect keys and trinkets, layered within a curated bookshelf vignette, or positioned on a desk as a catch-all for stationery items.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a non-abrasive silver cream diluted with water, avoiding harsh chemicals or aggressive scrubbing that might remove the thin remaining silver layer and expose further copper.
