Royal Doulton Lambeth Slater’s Patent Stoneware Vases with Enamel Floral Décor, C. 1910

1900 - 1920
Description

Royal Doulton Lambeth matched pair of monumental Slater’s Patent vases, enamelled floral design, circa 1910

A superb and rare matched pair of monumental Royal Doulton Lambeth Slater’s Patent stoneware vases, dating to circa 1910. These tall statement pieces showcase the richly textured and gilded surface characteristic of Slater’s Patent ware, a decorative technique developed by Doulton in the late 19th century.

Each vase has a tapering baluster body surmounted by a cobalt-blue everted neck. The central section is intricately decorated with hand-enamelled floral motifs in turquoise and white, set against a richly gilded two-tone background. The textured ground provides a striking contrast to the smooth upper collar, creating an interplay of colour and surface that is both refined and dramatic.

The vases are marked on the underside with the impressed Royal Doulton Lambeth mark and shape number X2987. This pair exemplifies the artistic innovation of Doulton’s Lambeth studio during the Edwardian period and represents a pinnacle of British stoneware artistry.

These vases are ideal for collectors of Royal Doulton, Art Nouveau ceramics, or for use as focal points in period or contemporary interiors. Matched pairs of this size and quality are extremely uncommon.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced at the Lambeth pottery in London, Slaters Patent ceramics feature a pressed fabric or lace texture coated in gold gilding and finished with hand-painted enamel floral motifs, typical of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

These decorative pieces were manufactured from high-fired stoneware ceramic, decorated via lace impressions, layered with metallic gilding, and highlighted with raised enamel pigments.

Authentic items feature impressed Doulton Lambeth factory stamps on the underside, dedicated patent marks, and a distinctively raised, tactile lace-effect surface background.

A pair of gilded stoneware vases functions effectively when positioned symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard to add historical detail and contrast against neutral walls.

Dust surfaces gently using a clean, soft cloth or dry brush; avoid soaking in water, abrasive scrubbers, or chemical detergents to protect the applied gilding and enamel work.
