Rare Japanese Sumida Gawa pottery vase, signed "Hiroshi", c. 1890–1920

A rare and highly collectible Japanese Sumida Gawa pottery vase, crafted during the late Meiji to early Taisho period (circa 1890–1920). This finely made export ware features a distinctive hand-modelled scene of a child clinging to the side of the vase—an iconic motif in Sumida ceramics. It is signed on the base with the character ? ("Hiroshi").

The vase is glazed in a rich oxblood red, with an unglazed buff-coloured neck and applied white highlights. These contrasting elements enhance the three-dimensional figural decoration, showcasing the dramatic and expressive qualities that define the Sumida Gawa style.

Sumida Gawa pottery was developed in Tokyo during the late nineteenth century, primarily for export to Western markets during the Meiji and Taisho eras. Named after the Sumida River, this style of ceramics became known for heavy flambe glazes and detailed applied figures in relief.

Sumida ceramics are constructed from a heavy earthenware or terracotta clay body. The upper portions usually feature thick, lead-based flambe glazes, while lower sections often remain unglazed or cold-painted with textured ribbed grounds.
