1940s Motor Car Time Trials Pocket Watch Chrono

1940s Valjoux car time trials pocket watch mono-pusher chronograph.

The chronograph has a Valjoux movement, believed to be the 17 jewel calibre 5KVM, a pocket watch column-wheel chronograph movement, also called the calibre 551, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner cover

The chronograph measures 51mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is marked as being ‘metal extra blanc’ (white metal), probably nickel. The front and sides of the case are in good condition, some unevenness to the hinged case back.

The glass lens is in good condition.

The dial is in its original finish and looks good to the naked eye. If viewed closely, there are a few hairlines. Original pin set hands which would usually date it back to around 1900/1910s but we think this is a later piece, probably 1940s, and they have kept the complication of the pin-set mechanism. The chronograph feature is operated by way of the mono pusher on the crown. The dial is marked “kilometres 1er tour”… this, along with the speeds given, suggest it would have been car or motorbike speed trials, in this instance measuring the kilometres per hour of the first lap. The chronograph re-sets to just to the right of zero.

The chronograph comes with a leather albert, and it all comes in a new presentation box.
