Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An open-faced pocket watch, or Lepine calibre, features a case without a protective metal cover over the crystal, allowing the dial to be read directly. Popularised in the 19th and early 20th centuries, this configuration places the winding stem at the 12 oclock position.

During the 1920s, Swiss timepieces were encased in solid gold, such as 14ct or 18ct yellow gold, paired with metal dials and blued steel hands. Internal mechanical movements utilised synthetic ruby or sapphire jewels to minimise friction on pivot points.

Authentic pieces feature hallmark stamps inside the case back indicating gold purity (such as 0.585 for 14ct), maker marks, and Swiss assay control stamps. Additional indicators include hand-finished movement components and precise typography on the dial.

Beyond traditional waistcoat or pocket wear attached to an Albert chain, an antique pocket watch can be displayed under a glass dome pocket watch stand on a desk, or mounted in a felt-lined shadow box frame.

Keep the timepiece away from moisture, strong magnetic fields, and extreme temperature variations. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years to clean the movement and apply fresh watch oils.
