Royal Worcester Porcelain Vase, Hand-painted Chrysanthemums, Pierced Gilt Handles, 1890

19th century
Description

A rare and exceptionally large Royal Worcester porcelain vase, crafted in 1890 during the height of the Victorian era. This striking baluster-form vase stands at an impressive 41 cm, making it considerably larger than most examples of its type. The generous proportions, hand-painted decoration, and finely modelled details reflect the highest standards of Royal Worcester production during the Aesthetic Movement.

The body is decorated in vibrant multicoloured enamels with a chrysanthemum motif on an ivory ground, a palette and composition inspired by the Japonisme trend that defined much of the late 19th-century decorative arts. The soft background is further enriched with raised gilding and delicate white enamel jewelling to the neck and handles.

The sculptural pierced handles are finished in rich gold and show losses from age-related wear, but still retain their visual impact. The dramatic shape and finely applied gilt elements are characteristic of Royal Worcester's technical excellence, combining sculptural form with painterly finesse.

The underside is marked with the puce Royal Worcester crown and circle mark and carries the date letter “a” for 1890, along with the British diamond registration mark for November 28, 1883, and the impressed model number 942. These confirm its authenticity and status as a registered design.

A standout display piece for collectors of English Aesthetic porcelain, Royal Worcester vases, or late Victorian decorative arts. Ideal for mantel, cabinet, or centrepiece display in a refined period interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian Royal Worcester porcelain is renowned for its soft satin finish, often referred to as blush ivory, combined with intricate hand-painted botanical studies and rich gilt highlights inspired by Japanese and Renaissance design traditions.

These decorative vessels were crafted from fine bone china or soft-paste porcelain, finished with translucent glazes, overglaze enamel paints, and liquid burnished gold for gilded accents.

Authentic pieces feature the printed Royal Worcester factory stamp on the underside, often accompanied by a system of dots or letters indicating the exact year of manufacture, along with fine, raised gilding and artist markings.

Victorian porcelain vases make effective focal points when placed on a minimalist sideboard, mantelpiece, or styled within an eclectic gallery shelf arrangement alongside modern art.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth; avoid immersing the piece in water or applying abrasive chemical cleansers, which can wear away delicate overglaze gilding and enamels.
