FAQs

Japanese blue and white porcelain, historically known as Sometsuke, features cobalt oxide decoration applied under a clear feldspathic glaze. Originating primarily in the Arita and Imari regions, this tradition combines traditional Asian brushwork with refined stoneware and porcelain production techniques.

Pieces are made from kaolin clay, painted with cobalt pigment onto the unfired or biscuit-fired body, and coated with a transparent glaze before high-temperature firing. This technique bonds the blue decoration permanently beneath the vitreous surface layer.

Authentic pieces often exhibit minor hand-painting variations, unglazed foot rims showing kaolin clay texture, and fine glaze crackle or firing imperfections. Older examples may also feature spur marks on the base where the item was supported in the kiln.

A large charger can be placed on a plate stand atop a sideboard, integrated into a gallery wall collection, or displayed inside a glass-fronted cabinet to complement both traditional and modern decor.
