A superb Japanese Meiji period satsuma antique table lamp standing on a beautiful bronze base with elephant heads stylised as feet. The porcelain body of the lamp has fine hand painted scenes of noble men, women and children dressed opulently in traditional attire with intricate designs to their clothing. There are mountain and pagoda scenes to the backgrounds, with birds in flight and a bird perched with white peonies, with gilt detail throughout and decorative borders.
The lamp has a cast bronze cap with floral motifs and a shaped neck which terminates to single switched bulb holder.
The name Hinks & Son, Patent is stamped in to the bronze casting.
At some time converted from oil to electricity, the lamp has been newly rewired and is in working order.
James Hinks worked at the Crystal Lamp Works on the corner of Great Hampton Street and Hockley Street in Birmingham where he was manufacturing improved oil lamps. The company went by Hinks & Son once his son James was established within the business. In 1864 the company had patented the Duplex Lamp, which used two wicks instead of the usual one. This gave out twice the light and also did not need frequent trimming or give off nasty smoke or smells.
The 40cm wide ivory silk lampshade is included.
