Old Paris Porcelain Vase in the Style of Jacob Petit, Hand-painted Floral Design, France C. 1850s

19th century
Description

A finely crafted French porcelain vase attributed to the style of Jacob Petit (1796–1868), a celebrated designer known for his bold Rococo Revival pieces during the Napoleon III period. This elegant Old Paris vase dates to around 1850 and reflects the lavish decorative arts of mid-19th century France.

The vase features a flared oval form with a scalloped rim, moulded footed base, and raised rococo-style ornamentation with gilded highlights. At the centre, a richly coloured floral bouquet is painted by hand in tones of violet, red, yellow, and blue. The vivid palette and expressive floral composition are hallmarks of Petit's distinctive style.

Old Paris porcelain, or Vieux Paris, refers to hard-paste porcelain produced by independent workshops around Paris, noted for gilding, hand-painted floral motifs, and Rococo Revival shapes.

These vessels were formed from hard-paste porcelain fired at elevated temperatures, then finished with overglaze enamel hand-painting and gold leaf trim.

Authentic pieces feature detailed botanical painting, heavy gilding, asymmetrical Rococo scrollwork, and occasionally an underglaze blue JP mark, though many examples were left unmarked.

Place the vessel on a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard as a decorative accent, set against neutral walls to highlight the polychrome floral details.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or brush, avoiding chemical cleaners, water immersion, or abrasive materials that may wear away the surface gilding and enamel.
