Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian chests of drawers were produced during the reigns of King George I through George IV (17141830). Characterised by symmetrical design, classical proportions, and fine joinery, they were traditionally built from solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring brass drop handles and bracket feet.

Primary woods during the Georgian era included imported Cuban and West Indian mahogany, native oak, and walnut. Secondary woods for drawer linings typically comprised pine or oak, joined with hand-cut dovetails and fitted with solid brass swan-neck or bail handles.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut, slightly irregular dovetail joints, hand-sawn secondary timber on the drawer undersides, and natural wood shrinkage marks. Brass hardware often shows subtle hand-casting variations and historical surface oxidisation around keyholes and handles.

Dark mahogany furniture pairs well with modern neutral paint palettes, textured linen textiles, and contemporary artwork. Placing a compact chest in an entryway, alcove, or bedroom creates a grounded focal point that balances historic timber with modern minimalist elements.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme fluctuations in humidity to prevent timber warping or veneer splitting.
