FAQs

Scottish artist David Roberts travelled to Egypt and the Levant in the late 1830s, producing detailed drawings of monuments and landscapes. These sketches were translated into lithographs by Louis Haghe and published between 1842 and 1849, offering Western audiences some of the earliest widely distributed visual records of the region.

Nineteenth-century lithographs were produced using limestone plates treated with oil-based ink to transfer images onto rag paper. Tints were applied either through chromolithographic printing using multiple stones or through hand-colouring with watercolour pigments after printing.
