Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A dhal is a traditional convex circular shield originating from the Indian subcontinent, historically used for personal defence. These shields feature a curved profile made from metal or animal hide and are typically characterised by four central raised bosses.

Traditional dhal shields were forged from steel, iron, or brass, while non-metallic versions utilised hide such as buffalo or rhinoceros skin. Decorative examples often incorporated damascening or koftgari work, where gold or silver wire was inlaid onto a steel surface in detailed floral patterns.

Authentic historical pieces demonstrate hand-hammered metallurgy, evidence of age-related patination, and hand-applied overlay work rather than modern chemical etching. Additionally, functional ring attachments or rivets on the reverse side correspond directly to the four external raised bosses.

A dhal shield can be mounted as a central wall feature above a mantelpiece, integrated into a gallery wall display, or set upon a plate stand within a bookcase. The metallic tones of brass and steel provide texture and historic interest in traditional libraries and contemporary eclectic spaces.

To preserve the original patination and inlaid metals, clean the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid abrasive metal polishes or liquid chemical cleaners that can lift delicate wire inlay, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect against moisture.
