Taxidermy- Rare Stuffed Grey Starling By H. N. Pashley

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Kendall House Antiques Ltd.

With old pencil inscription to rear of case “Grey Starling, shot 1912, by Major H.D. Seale” plus Henry Nash Pashley’s distinctive and informative large trade label.

For more information see “A History of British Taxidermy” by C. Frost, still my personal favourite book on the subject of Victorian taxidermy, published in 1987. (one currently available in stock).

The following is an extract: Pashley rented a shop in Cley, ‘The Fishmongers Arms’ where he was to remain for the rest of his life. In 1925, shortly after his death, his Notes on the Birds of Cley, Norfolk was published. This consists mainly of notes on the birds of the area and is an extremely scarce book today.

“Cley-next-the-sea and the surrounding area on the bleak north Norfolk coast was a well-known area for rare birds, especially during the autumn migration. Many passed through Pashley’s hands and his diaries accurately reflect the migration patterns of most species that take place on that part of the coast”
