Georgian Mahogany Chest of Drawers
A large chest with an unusual configuration of five long graduated drawers, the top with moulded edge and cross banding. The drawers with brass swan neck handles, brass escutcheons and locks to each (no keys), lined in oak with pine bases. Stands on shaped bracket feet supported by laminated shaped blocks. The back boarded in pine.
English, circa 1780
101cm H, 104cm W, 59cm D.
This chest compares to many designed by Chippendale for Dumfries house, which is not very far from us here in Galloway, most notably the design of the laminated bracket feet, which was a feature on many items of his furniture. This is a chest of larger than normal proportions, the 5 drawer configuration makes it quite unusual and it is finished in well figured mahogany. A lovely example of the later Georgian period presented in excellent condition.
