Regency Rosewood Canterbury

19th century
Description

A superb rosewood Canterbury dating from the early 19th century. It has three sections separated by X-Frame divisions with beautiful laurel wreath carvings. Each corner has a turned acorn shaped finial and it has a single drawer with turned handle. It stands on turned legs with the original brass castors below. It is a good quality piece and the wood has a beautiful colour and grain.

It is in good condition for its age and it strong and sturdy. There are some signs of age and use, some small knocks and minor marks and the top of one finial has a small chip but nothing detrimental or untoward. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally designed in the late 18th century, a Canterbury is a low wooden rack divided into partitions to store sheet music, bound volumes, or periodicals. Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned the initial design, these stands feature dividers, a base drawer, and legs fitted with castors.

Regency Canterburys were typically crafted from hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, featuring turned spindles, pierced fretwork, and X-frame dividers. Hand-dovetailed base drawers and brass castors on turned legs are structural hallmarks of 19th-century period construction.

Authentic 19th-century examples display features including natural patina, hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer, and period-correct brass castors. Inspect the rosewood grain patterns, carved scroll or wreath motifs, and wood oxidisation inside drawer linings.

A Canterbury functions beside an armchair or sofa as a compact side table, suited for storing magazines, art books, or vinyl records. Position it near library seating or a fireplace alcove to incorporate historical decorative elements into living spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the wood finish and moisture balance. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, fading, or cracking of the rosewood veneer.
