Monogrammed TG, Late 19th Century Symbolist Pre- Raphaelite Oil Painting
An intriguing painting displaying imaginative symbolism and referencing the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The painting represents a deeper meaning and goes beyond literal interpretation. In art, the moon denotes femininity, change, the cyclical nature of life and the ebb and flow of existence.
Signed with the monogram TG (Thomas Gotch?) and probably English as it is painted on a Reeves of London canvas. Using the canvas stamp verso the painting can be dated to 1899. The letter “D” shows that this was one of their more expensive canvases.
Condition
Slight craquelure where the paint is thickest otherwise in good sound original condition. The frame is a modern replacement.
