Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In Victorian society, visiting card cases were essential social accessories used to carry personal calling cards when paying formal visits. Leaving a card was a strict element of 19th-century etiquette, and the design and material of the case signified the owners social status.

Victorian card cases were crafted from a variety of materials including sterling silver, tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, ivory, and papier-mache. Silver examples were often decorated with hand engraving, chasing, or engine turning.

Authentic British silver card cases feature official hallmarks including the lion passant for sterling purity, an assay office mark, a makers mark, and a specific date letter. The presence of hand engraving and age-appropriate wear around hinges further indicates authenticity.

A Victorian silver card case can be displayed on a sideboard top, curated inside a glass dome, or placed on a tray within a bookshelf arrangement. It serves as a textured decorative accent in traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Clean the silver using a soft microfibre cloth and a non-abrasive silver polish specially formulated for historical metalwork. Store the item in a dry environment inside anti-tarnish cloth to minimize oxidisation and protect delicate surface engraving.
