Child’s Georgian Caned Bergere Chair C1830

18th century
Description

This charming GEORGIAN CANED BERGERE CHAIR was made for a Child and dates from circa 1830.

It appears to be the original cane which now has a lovely, mellow colour.

The CHAIR is in original, unrestored condition. The missing cross stretchers between the legs suggests it was once fixed on a stand to enable the child to reach the grown-ups’ table.

An eye-catching little CHAIR that displays so well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bergere chair is an enclosed armchair featuring a timber frame fitted with woven cane or upholstered panels. Child-sized versions were crafted during the Georgian era to mirror adult style and proportions for domestic nursery settings.

Early nineteenth-century caned seating was typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, integrated with hand-woven rattan cane for the backrest, seat, and side panels.

Authentic pieces from this period display hand-cut joinery, pegged mortise and tenon construction, subtle irregularities in the hand-woven cane, and natural surface patination or timber oxidisation.

A child-sized antique chair functions as an accent piece in a hallway, a decorative element within a nursery, or alongside low occasional furniture to add historical contrast to modern spaces.

Position the item away from direct heat sources to prevent the cane fibres from drying out, and gently wipe the timber and cane with a slightly damp cloth to preserve moisture balance.
