M Lees and Sons has dated this Chinese Red Lacquer Cabinet to the 1900s.
The panels featuring traditional Chinese figural and landscape scenes, together with panels of birds and flowers. The surrounds of the panels with blue , green and red lacquer borders inlaid with pieces of iridescent nacre shell.

The side uprights with gilded decoration, the whole raised on shaped ‘key’ feet.
The ends with panels , the top of traditional cleated panel construction.
Originating from the north-eastern Zhejiang Province and the Ningbo sea-port area of China, a region renowned for the production of this type of carved and lacquer decorated furniture , the coastal position providing the ready availability for the use of sea-shells in this type of lacquer-work.

In good original condition, with some wear to gilding and lacquer surfaces commensurate with age, use and purpose. Minor historic marks and stains to the top .
A highly decorative piece of Chinese oriental furniture to bring an exotic accent to an interior scheme.
