Portrait Head of a Young Woman. Pencil on light green laid paper, displayed in an oak frame with a deep white mount. The portrait came with another, worked in pastels with identical mount and frame. Two leading experts identified the portrait as being by A. K. Lawrence. (48.3 x 43.2 cm.)Lawrence was a painter and muralist, born in Lewes, Sussex. He studied under Richard George Hatton at King Edward VII School of Art in Newcastle upon Tyne, and under William Rothenstein at the Royal College of Art, 1920-23. In his final year, he was awarded the coveted Prix de Rome in 1923, where he spent two years at the BSR in the Italian capital.He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1930 and a full member in 1938. He also showed at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters who elected him to their ranks in 1947. Among Lawrence�s notable murals are ones in Laing Art Gallery, the Palace of Westminster and the Bank of England. He died in Kensington, London.
