Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, pen and ink drawings were widely utilised by military artists and topographers to record battles, troop movements, and uniforms before photography was commonplace. These works relied on fine line work, often combined with ink washes, to convey movement, atmospheric conditions, and strategic formations.

Artists typically utilised dip pens with steel or quill nibs alongside iron gall or India ink on woven rag paper. Diluted ink washes were applied with brushes to create tonal depth, and finished works were often mounted on card and framed in carved or moulded timber.

Authentic drawings from this period exhibit natural age marks such as foxing, toning, or minor paper discolouration. Magnification reveals continuous hand-drawn ink lines and wash variations rather than the dot matrix pattern characteristic of mechanical print reproductions.

Framed military sketches work exceptionally well when arranged in a gallery wall layout alongside complementary monochrome prints or period maps. They also serve as effective focal points above a dark wood desk, library shelving, or within a traditional study.

To prevent fading and deterioration, display paper artwork behind UV-protective glass and use acid-free mounting materials. Keep the framed drawing away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with high humidity or fluctuating temperatures.
