Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Decanter labels, historically referred to as bottle tickets, emerged in Britain during the eighteenth century to identify the contents of opaque glass bottles and cut-crystal decanters. By the Victorian era, silversmiths created intricate naturalistic designs, such as foliage and vine leaves, to designate specific wines and spirits.

Victorian decanter labels were primarily crafted from solid sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver, or Sheffield plate. Techniques included casting, hand-chasing, and piercing lettering directly into the metal, with silver chain loops attached for hanging over decanter necks.

Authentic British silver wine labels bear official assay marks, including the lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark such as the London leopards head, a monarchs duty mark, a date letter, and makers initials stamped into the silver body.

These historical accessories are frequently displayed on crystal decanters situated atop a bar cart, silver tray, or drinks cabinet. They add historical interest to barware arrangements and gentlemans library settings.

Silver labels should be gently cleaned using a soft cotton cloth and specialized silver polish to remove tarnish while preserving delicate chasing details. Avoid dipping entire chains into harsh chemical cleansers to prevent premature wear.
