Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Aesthetic Movement mirror design emerged in the late 19th century, focusing on art for arts sake. Key characteristics include ebonised wood finishes, Anglo-Japanese influences, painted floral or naturalistic panels, gilded geometric patterns, and multi-tiered or asymmetric mirror glass arrangements.

These mirrors were typically constructed from hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or fruitwood that were chemically darkened or painted to imitate ebony. Ornamentation included hand-painted lacquer panels, gilding with gold leaf, and silvered glass mirror inserts.

Authentic pieces display natural age-related oxidisation on the mirror backing, hand-painted details with visible brushwork, and joinery methods consistent with late 19th-century cabinetmaking, such as hand-cut dovetails and slotted screws.

In modern interiors, an ebonised overmantel mirror functions as a graphic focal point when placed above a chimney breast, a minimalist fireplace, or a wide dining room sideboard. The dark frame pairs well with neutral walls, jewel-toned paint schemes, or contemporary brass fixtures.

Clean ebonised wood using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh solvents or excess water that could lift delicate painted decoration. Gilded areas should be dusted lightly with a soft brush to prevent rubbing off the gold leaf.
