Victorian glass domes were designed to protect delicate mechanical clocks, taxidermy, or wax flower arrangements from dust and soot, whilst providing an unobstructed view of the object within.

Nineteenth-century glass domes were hand-blown using cylinder glass methods, resulting in slight thickness variations and subtle air seeds. The bases were typically crafted from turned or inlaid hardwoods such as walnut, ebonised fruitwood, or mahogany.
