Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Straw work maritime art involves the creation of detailed three-dimensional models and decorative panels using flattened, split, and dyed straw. Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this folk art form was frequently produced by prisoners of war or sailors during extended voyages to depict naval vessels.

Traditional ship dioramas were built using lightweight woods, straw marquetry, bone, thread rigging, and paper. The assembled models were secured within glazed timber display cases, often featuring painted plaster or carved wood to simulate sea waves.

Authentic period examples feature natural variations in the straw patina, age-related oxidation to the varnishes, original hand-cut glass, and period joinery on the timber casing. The presence of hand-carved details and period-appropriate hull profiles also indicates authenticity.

A glazed maritime diorama serves as a prominent focal point when positioned on a sideboard, mantlepiece, or within a library bookcase. Pairing the item with dark woods, brass instrumentation, and structured architectural elements enhances its historical character.

The item must be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent the organic straw from brittle degradation. Dust the outer wooden casing with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid moisture contact with internal components.
