The portrait is signed by Wagner, a highly sought-after porcelain artist renowned for lifelike execution and attention to detail. Esther is depicted standing against a serene landscape with the sea and a pastel-toned sky, wearing a flowing grey robe with a gold-embellished neckline, and her long, wavy brown hair adorned with a red headband. This exceptional artwork exemplifies Royal Vienna’s mastery in porcelain painting, with remarkable depth, detail, and expression.
The cobalt blue border is adorned with raised gold scrollwork, lattice patterns, and floral motifs, with jewel-like enamel accents further enhancing the luxurious design. The relief-applied gold adds texture and depth to this exquisite decorative plate. The reverse bears the blue beehive mark, traditionally associated with Royal Vienna porcelain.
The Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna, commonly known as Royal Vienna, was founded in 1718 and became one of Europe’s most prestigious porcelain manufacturers, supplying luxurious hand-painted pieces to European aristocracy. Though the factory ceased operations in 1864, its distinctive style continued to influence later porcelain workshops.
