Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antique mahogany framed mirrors from the 19th and early 20th centuries typically feature dense, finely grained timber, deep reddish-brown tones, and elegant hand-carved or moulded surrounds. Design styles often incorporate arched headers, canted corners, or subtle architectural moulding influenced by Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian tastes.

The frames were constructed using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers laid over secondary timbers like pine or oak. The reflective glass in earlier examples was mercury-silvered plate glass, which was later superseded by silver nitrate backing towards the late 19th century.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, original wooden backboards with natural oxidisation, and slight irregularities in the mirror plate such as gentle foxing or dark spots. The timber frame will display an authentic patina built up over decades of polishing, along with historical wear patterns on the base and corners.

A tall mahogany mirror can be mounted in a hallway, positioned above a console table, or rested securely against a wall in a bedroom to maximize natural light. Pairing the rich, dark timber with neutral wall tones creates a striking contrast that bridges classic antiquerity with modern minimalist aesthetic.

Clean the wooden frame regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and nourish the mahogany occasionally using a natural beeswax polish. Avoid spraying glass cleaners directly onto the frame, as harsh chemicals can strip the original varnish and damage the silver backing of the glass.
