An 18th Century Italian Console Table with Original Silver Gilt and Painted Finish.
This beautiful rococo form console table was made in Italy in the mid 18th century. It has a shapely top, supported on a very decorative pierced, asymmetrical frieze. The table has four cabriole legs with leaf carved knees and stands on knurled leaf and scroll decorated feet. It has a disguised drawer in the centre of the frieze. Decorated in a silver gilt finish throughout, with the exception of part of the top which has blue-green paint on it, and has aged beautifully.
The decorative motifs on the table are largely rococo in style. The C and S scrolls combined with naturalistic foliage here are beautiful. The drawer front also features a large cross which is unusual on a piece of this sort. This raises the possibility that perhaps the table was originally intended for a religious building or may represent the devotion of the person who commissioned the piece. Either way it is very interesting feature.
A very beautiful table!
