Finger bowls were developed for formal dining service in the nineteenth century to allow guests to cleanse their hands between courses. English glassworks, particularly in the Stourbridge region, elevated these utilitarian vessels into decorative art glass featuring complex opalescent finishes, threaded detail, and manipulated rims.

Crafted from hand-blown glass, these vessels often incorporated small amounts of uranium oxide to produce a distinct vaseline or opalescent sheen. Threaded decoration was applied by winding continuous glass filaments around the vessel body while molten, before shaping the rim with crimping tools.
