Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated these Antique Shahsavan Soumac Bags to the 1880s.
Although the Shahsavan produced some piled rug in the 19th century, the main weaving technique they employed was a complex flatweave known as 'soumac which was used to produced storage and saddle bags. This handsome pair of soumac bags shown here are exceptional. They are complete and in very good original condition. The stylised eagles in the central cartouche are unusual as are some of the other features in the design. The ivory border is also beautifully drawn. Excellent natural dyes have been used which have created a unified and harmonious composition. This is a rare collectors items. The dimensions are 72cm x 68cm, and 67cm x 67cm. The price for the pair is £2600.
