A Pair of Shahsavan Soumac Bags, Caucasus, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

The Shahsavan are an ancient Turkic tribe that migrated in the northern Caucasus and North-West Persia for centuries. They are noted for their material culture, including weavings that were utilitarian weavings such as storage and saddle bags. Although the Shahsavan produced some piled rug in the 19th century, the main weaving technique they employed was a complex flatweave known as 'soumac which was used to produced storage and saddle bags. This handsome pair of soumac bags shown here are exceptional. They are complete and in very good original condition. The stylised eagles in the central cartouche are unusual as are some of the other features in the design. The ivory border is also beautifully drawn. Excellent natural dyes have been used which have created a unified and harmonious composition. This is a rare collectors items. The dimensions are 72cm x 68cm, and 67cm x 67cm. The price for the pair is £2600.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shahsavan Soumac bags are utilitarian textiles hand-woven by the nomadic Shahsavan confederation of the Caucasus and northwestern Persia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Used primarily as bedding bags (mafrash) or saddlebags (khorjin) for transport, these textiles were flat-woven using intricate extra-weft wrapping techniques to create dense, durable patternwork.

These textiles were constructed entirely from hand-spun sheeps wool, utilising wool for both the structural warp threads and decorative pattern wefts. The Soumac technique involves wrapping coloured pattern threads around pairs of warp threads, creating a raised, tapestry-like face while leaving structural loops or plain-weave selvedges intact.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature saturated natural dyes derived from madder, indigo, and plant sources, which exhibit subtle tonal variations known as abrash. Look for structural indicators such as loose thread ends on the reverse side characteristic of genuine extra-weft wrapping, hand-bound selvedges, and tribal geometric motifs specific to Caucasian weaving traditions.

Antique tribal textile panels are frequently custom-framed or mounted on fabric boards to be displayed as decorative wall art in contemporary spaces. Smaller panels and bag faces are also adapted into custom accent cushions to add texture and historical character to neutral seating arrangements.

Keep antique wool textiles away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading of natural dyes. Gently vacuum using a low-suction upholstery attachment without a rotating brush, and ensure the piece is kept in a dry, well-ventilated environment protected against moths.
